Peace of Pie Pizzeria serving up healthy and delicious in Alta Vista

A week ago I took a road trip to Alta Vista, Virginia to visit Peace of Pie Pizza. I met them through social media and wanted to spend some time learning how their business started, what makes them so unique and of course sampling one of their delicious pies.

Peace of Pie was started in 2011 by owner, Donna Hendricks and is helped run by her son, Travis Gordon.

As soon as I pulled up, I fell in love. Located on 519 Broad Street in Alta Vista, it has that neighborhood feel and is so welcoming. I fell in love with the memorabilia displayed on the walls.  During my visit, many who are regulars came to pick up their orders.

I asked if Donna has always enjoyed creating and cooking. Her son told me "She has always enjoyed cooking, but did not realize how good she was at it until later in life."

The business hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 2-8 and Friday and Saturday 2-9. However, the work day is normally a 12 hour day.I admire their dedication and work ethic.  Donna and Travis take pride is providing the freshest of ingredients. They make their dough fresh each day, when they run out for the day, they will not prepare more until the next day as they believe in starting fresh each day. I asked Donna what she wants her business to be known for, what is she most proud of and she told me "Fresh and Local ingredients. I like to source as much produce and ingredients locally as possible."  Low fat skim cheese is used on the pizzas, no sugar is added to the pizza sauce and all salads are freshly made.

The most popular item on the menu is the "Kitchen Sink" pizza. It comes with Pepperoni, ham, sausage, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black olives, bacon and hamburger. They serve two types of pizzas; Their basic pizza which can be served on a regular, thin or paper thin crust. They serve a gluten free pizza choice as  well. Specialty pizzas can also be ordered.

Fresh salads, cheesesticks, calzones, fresh baked spaghetti, wings, 12" subs and 8" pockets are also available.

I asked them what advice would they give to someone who is considering starting their own business and has just begun. Travis stated "Don't regret taking chances and believe in the chances you take."

I will definitely be visiting Peace of Pie Pizzeria again and so enjoyed getting to meet with Donna and Travis. They definitely are an example of what hard work and dedication can accomplish.
